Critically acclaimed multimedia production Far, Far From Ypres will visit ten venues across Scotland between August and November 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of the war.
Delivered by WW100 Scotland in partnership with Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland, Far, Far From Ypres uses the songs of the trenches to tell the story of the Scottish war effort, with a cast of 26 performers including Scottish folk scene favorites such as Barbara Dickson, Siobhan Miller, Dick Gaughan, Ian McCalman, Iain Anderson, Professor Gary West, Stephen Quigg and Ian Bruce.
The show was devised, written and produced by Ian McCalman of folk group The McCalmans to highlight the unique insight the songs offer into the life of a soldier. It shares the hope, suffering, endurance and fear associated with the war through the eyes of fictional, prototypical soldier, Jimmy MacDonald. Like many young men, Jimmy is full of enthusiasm and joins up right away, however, when he is sent to the Flanders trenches he begins to experience the true horrors of war.
The show and the programme will also incorporate stories from the local area at each performance. If you have a World War One story about an ancestor from one of the below areas which you would like to share, please send in your story – no more than 200 words – and it could be considered for inclusion. Simply e-mail it to ScottishCommemorationsPanel@gov.scot, or send us a private message on Facebook, with contact details and a clear indication of which performance you are submitting it for. Submissions for each area will close three weeks ahead of the performance.
