HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL AND FIRST MINISTER TO ATTEND SERVICE COMMEMORATING SCOTTISH WOMEN’S HOSPITALS MOVEMENT

WW100 Scotland is inviting people to come along and celebrate the achievements of a remarkable woman at a service to be held in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, at 2pm on Wednesday 29 November 2017.

The event will see HRH The Princess Royal laying a wreath in the Cathedral in remembrance of Dr Elsie Inglis, the founder of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals, one hundred years to the hour of her funeral in St Giles Cathedral.

The service will be attended by the First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop, Lord Provost Frank Ross and officials from Serbia, Russia, France and Romania, representing the countries where the Scottish Women’s Hospitals were based.

Descendants of Elsie Inglis and the women serving in the Scottish Women’s Hospitals and members of the Medical & Dental Defence Union of Scotland will also attend.  The Military Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland will march down from the Castle Esplanade to perform in West Parliament Square, outside St Giles Cathedral, before the arrival of HRH The Princess Royal.

Professor Norman Drummond, chair of the Scottish Commemorations Panel appointed to oversee the WW100 commemorations on behalf of the Scottish Government, said:

“One hundred years ago St Giles Cathedral and the surrounding streets of Edinburgh were packed as people gathered to pay their respects to a truly remarkable Scotswoman. On Wednesday 29 November 2017, hundreds of people will do similarly and we would urge people to apply for tickets for the service.

“While we are truly proud of Dr Elsie Inglis’ achievements, I trust that she and the 1500 women who served with the Scottish Women’s Hospitals would see our centenary commemorations as befitting the honour in which they are still held and the remarkable difference that their lives of service made.”

Tickets are available to the general public for the service at St Giles Cathedral and can be reserved at https://elsieinglis.eventbrite.co.uk or by calling 0300 244 4000.
